About the Design
This design represents the growth of Pittsburgh out of its geological and physical history.  The elements include:

- Layers of time, layers of place, layers of ecological history
- Pittsburgh is a dinosaur
- It is elemental—a city built of ancient materials once extracted, now recombined
- It is massive, strong and deeply afflicted by its once prolific legacy
- The fires of industry dying, the city must reinvent itself or face extinction
- The possibility for a sustainable future
- A city rises on the hills
- A great green forest
- Dragon flies, sea creatures, protozoa, ice ages, geology, the great inland sea
- Three rivers create the landscape
- Steel and industry tapping the PA coal seam
- Highways strangle the city
