DaysSM
- DinoMite
Days is a community-wide effort to create an outdoor, prehistoric
public art exhibit of Jurassic proportions starting May
29 through September, 2003.
- One
hundred fiberglass dinosaurs will color the cultural landscape
of the region, celebrate the talents of regional artists
and cultivate funding for nonprofit organizations.
- DinoMite
Days is an attraction for anyone who loves natural history,
dinosaurs or art. It is expected to boost tourism and have
a significant economic impact on the Pittsburgh region.
- On
October 18, 2003, Carnegie Museum of Natural History will
host a gala event at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center
to auction off the DinoMite Days dinosaurs. A "Community
Day" will occur the following day, providing the public
a chance to visit all of the dinosaurs one last time in
one location before they find their way to their new homes.
- Visit
www.dinomitedays.org to learn more about the dinosaurs,
artists and the locations where the dinosaurs will be installed
throughout the city as well as various children's activities.
A "Dino Map" will be available on this Web site to help
the public find their way to see each dinosaur site.
DinoMite
Dinosaurs
- Dinosaurs
were selected because of Carnegie Museum of Natural History's
outstanding dinosaur collection, which has the third largest
repository of dinosaur fossils and contains one of the world's
greatest collections of publicly displayed dinosaur skeletons.
- Artists
and sponsaurs have chosen from three different dinosaur
types:
- Tyrannosaurus
rex - stands seven feet tall, ten feet long and
weighs 200 pounds.
- Torosaurus
- stands nearly five and a half feet tall, ten feet
long and weighs 200 pounds.
- Stegosaurus
- stands nearly five and a half feet tall, ten feet
long and weighs 200 pounds.
- Research
Casting International of Ontario, Canada, designed and manufactured
the dinosaurs.
- Many
dinosaurs are being created in an artist warehouse, located
in Monroeville, PA or at the artists' own studios.
DinoMite
Artists
- Carnegie
Museum of Natural History received 330 artist applications
from all over the country.
- The
youngest artist selected to participate is Alexander Overby,
a 14-year-old high school freshman from Pittsburgh.
- A jury
committee of art professionals, educators and critics approved
100 of the strongest and most creative dinosaur designs.
- Approved
artists live throughout the country, including New York,
Maryland, Kentucky, New Mexico and right here in Pittsburgh.
"Sponsaurships"
- Each
dinosaur is funded by a sponsaur - individuals, corporations,
schools and foundations.
- Sponsaurs
selected a dinosaur from a portfolio of approved designs
or commissioned an artist to create a design.
- Each
dinosaur will be accompanied by a plaque indicating its
creator and sponsaur.
- Sponsaurs
designate which nonprofit, 501(c) 3 charity will receive
50 percent of the bid money after the auction on October
18, 2003, while the remaining proceeds will be used to expand
the museum's dinosaur exhibits.
