About
the Design
Jen Urich used an innovative technique for this dinosaur.
First it was coated with a light-sensitive liquid silver/gelatin-based
emulsion. Using black & white medium and large format negatives,
and a photographic enlarger, images were projected onto the
fiberglass body. The technique is much like making a standard
black & white print; it involves a similar 2-step chemical
process (develop and fix).
Once set
into the silver/gelatin emulsion, the images adhered to the
fiberglass permanently. Once the emulsion had set and hardened,
a coat of oil-based polyurethane was applied over the images.
All of
the images used were photographed by Jen Urich in abandoned
steel mills in and around the Pittsburgh region.
