Coelophysis bauri
Coelophysis/

Coelophysis bauri
Fossil Sizes:
Length from head to tail:
8-10 feet
Weight: about 50 pounds
Diet: Carnivore (ate small vertebrates)
Habitat: Land
When: 215-200 Million Years Ago
Skeletal Features: A three-foot-tall carnivore?! Yep, carnivores come in all shapes and sizes! Because it was so small, Coelophysis probably traveled and hunted in herds. It had a long flexible neck and tail, and walked upright on its strong birdlike hind legs. Its front limbs ended in three clawed fingers that could grab and tear prey. Some adult fossils have been found with tiny Coelophysis skeletons inside them. Some paleontologists think that this means that Coelophysis ate other Coelophysis, while others think that this Coelophysis was pregnant. What do you think?
