Tyrannosaurus rex
Tyrannosaurus
"Tyrant Lizard"/dinosaur
T. rex
Fossil Size:
Length from head to tail: about 47 feet
Weight: about 7 tons
Diet: Carnivore
Habitat: Land
When: 74-66 Million Years Ago
Skeletal Features: T. rex had a long, powerful tail which it held off the ground, straight out behind its body. Its massive hind legs and hips supported all of its weight, allowing it to reach speeds up to 20 miles per hour! However, with such tiny front limbs, falling at this speed would have been fatal. T. rex had an unusually large skull, but large openings in the bone helped to reduce its weight. Inside its ferocious mouth were large pointed teeth with serrated edges. These acted like steak knives on the flesh of its prey.
