About the Design
When Jennifer Zimmerman moved to Pittsburgh from Toronto, she became fascinated with the legacy of Henry Phipps, who grew up in poverty in Pittsburgh.  As Phipps forged a friendship and business relationship with steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie, Phipps became wealthy beyond his wildest expectations.  He shared that wealth with the Pittsburgh region in an everlasting and generous way.  "Florasaurus," adorned with stunning depictions of flowers grown in the gardens of Phipps Conservatory, beautifully carries this legacy forward. Zimmerman and Urbschat's plants are rooted in industrial smokestacks to symbolize Phipps' wealth and success from the steel industry.  Blossoms grow from the stacks, signifying the germination and fruition of the philanthropic seed planted by Phipps more than 150 years ago.
